How our Easter really was… {Truth}

Hey friends,

It’s Easter Sunday night and I am sitting in bed with my feet up & sipping a cold drink – I’ve just had a soak in a hot bubble bath… Sounds pretty ideal right? Nice and relaxing… What a splendid way to spend an Easter Sunday evening… I really could just leave the post at this and be done with it, but I’ll be honest here and tell you how my Easter Sunday has really gone and why those few basic “self care” things NEEDED to happen.

Let me take you back to Thursday… I woke up to a very odd looking left eye. Like the bottom half my eyeball was blood shot red and it felt swollen… Great. I figured it may have been some random allergy, I had plans to attend an under 8’s day event with LuLu that day and had to get groceries for Good Friday, so it was a busy day – my eye was throbbing in pain but I didn’t have time to deal with it…
In the afternoon we all decide to go to the block to check out the progress on the house and I wanted to stop by the pharmacy and grabbed some eye drops as my eye still wasn’t improving & the pain was very distracting… I spoke to the pharmacist and they told me to go straight to an optometrist because my eye looked very bad… Great. 3:10pm on a Thursday afternoon, before the easter long weekend I had to try and get a last minute appointment in a small town… Thankfully I got an appointment and I was sitting in the waiting room, I get a text from Trent who was waiting in the car for me with the kids and it read; “Have to go home, Tommy has just been sick everywhere”. Here I am freaking out that I can’t race home and console and fix my baby and help clean up, but thankfully Trent is very capable and took care of it all like a champ. I was able to get my eye seen to, get ointment and eye drops… (Turns out a part of my eye was inflamed and started causing another part to deteriorate in a spot… As of Sunday night, it’s doing much better!)
That night was fairly sleepless as Tommy was unwell and Good Friday was a slow day, just taking care of our little man was our main focus.
(I still got to attend church and then I cooked a delicious dinner of homemade garlic sauce with snapper, rice, prawns, salad and buttered baked potatoes – it all sounds very mismatched but ended up being spot on!) At this point Tommy is on a very bland and simple diet, we couldn’t work out what was going on and continued watching him closely. He was/is acting happy, has energy and is seemingly fine, but randomly is throwing up and it’s not immediately after food or anything… It truly makes no sense…
Saturday rolls around, he only has 3 tiny little spit ups, so I think he must be getting better….
Then….
12:15am Easter Sunday morning… I wake up to warm liquid gushing over my shoulders and chest, I quickly realise it’s my baby, vomiting in his sleep all over me and our bed… I thank God, I honestly said this out loud “thank you for having him beside me right now God”… As I grabbed him and rolled him over so he wouldn’t choke and that’s when he woke up very startled. Thankfully LuLu who was also in the bed was curled up on the other side so she avoided the mess and Trent was working, so I really had to make a survival choice here… I knew to change the sheets I would have to wake LuLu, get her out of bed, turn all the lights on and it would take 5-10 minutes to get everything changed and clean and at this point I was so darn tired & weak I could barely stand… So I just cleaned myself up quickly, changed my top and cleaned Tommy up & threw a towel over the wet sheets… (I have a waterproof protector under my fitted sheet so I knew the mattress would be fine…) Not ideal and sleeping on a towel is something I do not recommend for comfort levels – but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes…
Trent wasn’t due home for like another 2 hours, so I walked and walked up and down the hallway trying to get my little man to settle, I laid in bed, sat on the couch, trying – I tried everything. He would nod off to sleep and then jolt awake… This continued to around 2am, when Trent finally got home and saved me and of course Tommy snuggled right into Trent and fell asleep…
So how did your Easter Sunday start? That good?
We were all up and out of bed before 6:30am.
We had fun doing the egg hunt and sharing in the excitement of new toys!
But Trent and I were both dead tired and bickered at each other a few times over stupid things and our patience was at an all time low. Then we ended up going to the doctors at 9am to get Tommy checked out… (Doctor also is stumped, hoping it’s a very mild form of gastro or a tummy bug presenting in an odd way… But if he worsens or doesn’t improve by Tuesday tests will be done)
I felt like I was running on total empty, I could barely move. I still had to peg out the bed sheets and then remake our bed and do all the other laundry, do groceries and tidy the house. We have sheets and towels everywhere at the moment to try and save our carpet and furniture if he was to be sick, so the state of my home isn’t making me happy either and add on the stress of having a baby (who is very small naturally so he doesn’t have weight to lose) being randomly & unexplainably sick… I was pretty much a wreck. I hate having my kids sick, it breaks my heart especially when it’s making no sense and I can’t “help”.
But I went home, pegged the laundry out, put another load on, tidied myself up, breastfed Tommy and put him to sleep, left Trent to nap/rest and took LuLu and headed to church… To rejoice in the fact He is risen, to listen to truth and just sit and be still… LuLu coloured quietly beside me as I listened about how loved I am and how great He is. I sat there quietly feeling like I was about to collapse – my bones ached and my body felt so weak, I prayed for strength to make it through the day,  for patience & wisdom, I asked our Lord to highlight some glimmers of joy in our day that at the time I just couldn’t find and prayed for the ability to give myself some grace and stop being so hard on myself…
Now church and prayer isn’t magic, it doesn’t instantly & magically fix things, but I always feel comfort at church & after praying. I know He is there, He loves & cares for me.
As we sung the last song at church LuLu wanted me to hold her, she clung to me, her little hands touching my hair and then holding me tightly, her head resting on my shoulder, she hardly ever does this anymore so I enjoyed every second of it – I savoured that moment and soaked it in. Despite feeling like I was too weak to hold her, I swayed gently and sung about our Lord rising from the dead on this day all those years ago and His love for us. He died to save us from our sins and rose 3 days later to give us eternal life, I felt so thankful for this life even the struggles.
For the rest of the day I powered through (I had to, what I didn’t get done today I would have to do on Monday and Trent was back to work then, so doing it while he was home to help me and stay with the kids made sense…) I got the groceries done, the bed made and the laundry finished and folded & put away… I gave myself some grace – we had ham and cheese toasted sandwiches for dinner, not exactly the roast I had planned.
By 4:45pm everyone was tired and our day was done. I vacuumed the floors like I do every night and quickly mopped them and we tucked our babies in bed. I ran a big hot bath with epsom salts and bubble bath and sunk down into it, snacking on a few Easter eggs, my first for the day & sipping cold water.

Then I had a hot shower and for a moment for my tired body felt better but now that I’m out and sitting here on my bed I can feel my bones aching again and I don’t know why, I really can’t explain it. But as soon as I get run down or not enough sleep – my body starts to crash, my bones aching is usually the first sign. It sucks, so I’ve got a cold drink and I’m venting my heart out to you all trying to relieve the stress and disappointment in myself.

Our Easter morning was still magical, we had an egg hunt and the kids loved their gifts. We spent time with a little friend who lives down the street, watched a movie and we spoke to our loved ones on the phone. We read Easter books and played games, Trent and the kids went for a walk around the block with some neighbours, but the enthusiasm on my end wasn’t to the level I like to give my kids, especially on special holidays. It was more on a survival level. That makes me feel disappointed in myself, but I know I have to give myself grace. I’m running on bare minimum sleep, my health isn’t terrific (working on it) and it’s just been a rough few days. There will be other Easters… There will be… And sometimes I think these rough days are blessings in disguise, they are given to us so we can appreciate the beautifully easy days where life just goes to plan that little bit more and also so I can share these stories – share them to encourage you.
No ones life is always perfect, kids get sick, lack of sleeps brings out the worst in everyone and somedays survival mode is all we can muster – occasionally even on special holidays… And that is ok. It is life.
Giving ourselves grace is vital, finding small ways to recharge with self care is vital and knowing it’s only a bad day/week is vital. This isn’t the story of my everyday, it’s a just a story of few hard days – days I probably won’t even remember in a year or 10! I try to remember this when I am struggling, this day will not be a stand out day, it’ll be a blur of the past, one day. I can chose to highlight what went right today and store that away in my mental memory bank or I can dwell on the negatives. I chose to remember the joy and let the hardships fade away.

Friends I hope somehow this rambling of words that have been typed with half closed eyes (so forgive the poor writing) has encouraged you today. Everyday won’t be magic, but there will be glimmers of joy in every single day. I can promise you that, you may just have to look a little harder.
I hope your Easter has been more easy & relaxing than ours!
Happy Easter.

I just thought I would add as of Monday morning at 11am we have had no more vomits since that midnight incident. Praying to God, touching wood and everything is crossed our Little Mitty is on the mend. We would appreciate any extra prayers, please. He is still on a very bland and simple diet but if he continues to keep everything down until tomorrow morning I will start reintroducing food. I hope this is the end of this awful & confusing sickness!

Impressive & simple NO BAKE choc ripple cake. {EASTER}

bake bread

Hey friends…

Any holiday for me means baking and making! I love to make/bake sweet treats for my loved ones… It’s almost like my love language.
For easter, my go-to treat to make is an easter choc-ripple cake. It’s a very simple, no bake cake that tends to always impress a crowd – though it can take a little time to assemble. (Last year I sent this cake out to Trent’s work for dessert for his crews monthly bbq and it was a huge hit, all the men really loved it.)
Now normally I would link to the recipe, but I’ve since discovered the site has shut down, so I give credit to Zamamabakes for this recipe, but here is my version of the choc-ripple easter cake…

Ingredients;

  • choc ripple biscuits
  • cream
  • maltesers
  • caramel sauce (I used salted caramel)
  • ice magic topping
  • your choice of easter treats to decorate cake

Steps;

  1. Decide on the size of cake, I made 2 different sized cakes. 1 larger one for a big party and 1 smaller one for us. (I used 2 600ml bottles of cream for this and I think about 4 packets of biscuits)
  2. Crush maltesers (I pop mine in a ziplock bag and smack them with a rolling pin, throwing them in a food processor or thermomix would work to.)
  3. Whip cream until thick. (I add caster sugar and a dash of vanilla to my cream, this is optional)
  4. Start assembling the cake, smooth on a layer of caramel, cream and then lightly dip in crushed maltesers.
  5. Stack biscuits standing on their sides. (If your first few biscuits are a little unstable, smooth some cream on the plate first and use it like glue)
  6. Continue topping biscuits with caramel, cream and maltesers and stacking on their sides until you have the size of your desired cake.
  7. Cover entire cake with cream.
    img_5223
  8. Decorate with your choice of topping.

img_5229

This cake is so wonderful & versatile, you can change up the filling and decorate with whatever toppings you like so really, this cake isn’t just good for easter but for any occasion or holiday!

img_5227
I hope you enjoyed this recipe, I would love to know what toppings you would use on this cake!
Please share this recipe with any friends you think would love this too!

Class & teacher EASTER gifts. {& 2 EASTER videos}

Hey friends!

It’s almost Easter and next week is the last week of school… Today we handed out LuLu’s Easter gifts for her class and teachers.
For the class we did orange bubble wands with green pipe cleaners attached to the lid – bubble wand carrots! And we also handed out little easter cards with them. All the kids seemed really surprised and they were a huge hit! LuLu was very proud handing each one out to the kids and wishing them a happy easter.

img_5012

For the teachers I filled a beautiful bunny jar from Kmart with Cadbury eggs for each of them (4 teachers).

img_5005

These gifts were very simple and affordable and they looked lovely.
Do you do class or teacher gifts for Easter?
Teachers work so tirelessly and I believe we will always be the type of family that makes an effort to look after the teachers of our kids. Little gifts and acknowledgements of how thankful we are for the work they do will be something we do often and for our kids entire schooling career. Gifts of thanks don’t have to be grand or big, I know teachers never expect them, but I think a little something is lovely, just to say we see the work you do and we truly appreciate you!
And as for class gifts, I like to remind LuLu that giving is more important than receiving and she absolutely loved giving gifts to all her friends. She said it made her feel happy and lovely!
I have 2 new videos up as well friends, an Easter decorate with me/decor tour video. CLICK HERE to watch it and a video about what’s in the kids Easter baskets, you can watch that one HERE.

Easy Easter crafts {2018}

img_4687

Hello friends!
It has been a long time between arts and crafts posts, so I thought since we are so close to the Easter Bunny/Bilby’s arrival that an Easter craft would be a wonderful idea.
These 4 crafts are super simple and LuLu absolutely loved them… I really encourage you to take the time to do some craft with your little loves, it’s a wonderful way to connect with them and you can really build up their confidence. Also remember craft is more than just painting and making something cute, it is full of so many wonderful skill developing tasks. It can improve fine motor skills, decision making, cognitive thinking, problem solving and so much more. And remember crafts don’t have to be pinterest perfect – ours most certainly aren’t but we think they are beautiful and enjoyed spending time together.

Easter basket cards…
img_4683

For this craft you will need;
– Brown paper (or paper coloured in brown/basket colour)
– glue
– brown crayon
– a plain piece of paper folded in half to be a card
– a toilet roll
– paint

  1. Cut brown paper into small strips.
  2. Glue pieces of paper into shape of basket
  3. Pinch toilet roll at the top of one side to create an egg shape, this is your stamp.
  4. Dip egg stamp in paint and press onto basket where eggs would be. Voila, eggs are in your basket. Continue adding your desired amount of eggs.
  5. Draw a handle on your basket.
  6. You are done.

Some bunny loves you card…

img_4682
For this craft you will need;
– Paint
– A card or white paper folded in half to be a card
– Hands to make hand prints
– Your choice of paint
– Pens

  1. Decide where you want your little hands to go.
  2. Paint little hands (only the 4 fingers and palm – not the thumb) with a paint brush (I find this the best way so you aren’t dipping hands in too much paint)
  3. Place hands on card, keeping fingers in a Spock like hand gesture, and lift off. (Spock like hand will give you bunny ears!)
  4. Repeat with however many little hands you have.
  5. Let dry.
  6. Draw details on bunny.
  7. Inside card write, “some bunny/bunnies love you, Happy Easter”.
  8. Now you have a sweet card to send to loved ones or surprise Dad with on Easter!

Spotty eggs…
img_4684

For this craft you will need;
– Paper or card
– Scissors
– Paint
– Cotton wool balls
– Pegs

  1. Cut out egg shape of the paper/card.
  2. Lay out paints.
  3. Pinch cotton wool balls with pegs – these are your stamps/brushes.
  4. Dip wool into paint and splodge on paper = spots.
  5. Decorate your egg how you wish.
    img_4694

Our final craft was painting some plaster shapes from Kmart, we buy these every Christmas and Easter, they are perfect for little hands and LuLu just really enjoys them. Big W also has fun sticker crafts and the grocery stores usually have colouring in books and sticker books out for Easter, LuLu loves all of those! We often have a never ending supply of holiday crafts!

4 Simple & fun Easter Crafts.

47D44A9F-27B3-4C62-8EE5-FA9AB1A9369E_zpstnd3q8cx

Hello!
It is that time of year, the Easter bunny is so close to hopping by.
We have been reading Easter books, singing songs, talking about why we celebrate Easter and doing LOTS of crafts.
I have documented the 4 crafts we loved the most and thought we would share them with you all today!
The 4 of these are very simple and 3 of them use very basic everyday items you probably have in your house & LuLu had a really good time with them.
There were parts that I helped her with, but for most of it she did everything and picked all the embellishments!
Now for the tutorials…

E8C5A10A-E79D-4EE3-8BCD-F177E9D45C5E_zpsnaeqgb4b

Easter stamps.
This one would have to be the most simple to create. These stamps turned out surprisingly very good, so cute in fact I got a bunch of plain cards and we made some quick and easy Easter cards for our loved ones!

You will need;

  • A paper towel roll or a few toilet rolls.
  • Scissors.
  • Tape or a stapler.
  • Paint.
  • Paper or cards.
  • Embellishments if you wish to add them to a card.
How to;
  1. For the egg shaped stamp pinch the top of a toilet roll, voila you have an egg shaped stamp.
  2. The bunny is a little more complex. You need to make 2 egg shaped stamps and attach them to a regular shaped roll. (So 2 ovals attached to a circle)
  3. You can attach them with a stapler or glue. I found sticky tape was quick & easy.
  4. Set out your paints & admire how easy this was and how cute your bunnies & eggs look!
  5. For our Easter cards we did 3 eggs on one side and 1 bunny on the other. We then added Easter egg sequins & little foam stickers. I think they look so sweet & lovely!

Paper plate bunny.

This craft turned out very cute and LuLu had so much fun making it! She did pretty much everything, I helped a little bit with attaching embellishments, but she insisted on helping glue each item & also painting the mouth on.
You will need;
  • Paper plates.
  • I used a doily as an added touch of pretty – but it’s not needed, I just had spare.
  • Cotton wool balls.
  • Plain paper or card.
  • Glue.
  • Stapler.
  • Pipe cleaners.
  • Paint.
  • Googley eyes – these are also optional but LuLu is obsessed with these eyes lately so every craft project we do needs eyes. You could just paint eyes on.
  • Magnets if you wish to hang it on the fridge.
How to;
  1. Attach paper plates to each other (I stapled them) & if using a doily glue that on now.
  2. Make prints of your little loves feet & hands. You can do this however it is easiest for you. LuLu sat on a step for me and I painted 1 foot at a time & stamped them, then I used a wet wash cloth to wipe her foot clean (we did this inside) & then did the same on her hands. You could also do this outside, but the day we did this was super windy! While the paint is still wet you can sprinkle with glitter if you like.
  3. While the prints dry, glue cotton balls to the bunny. To do this I just spread glue over the area of the bunny that needed fluff and let LuLu attach the cotton wool balls how she wanted. (Turns out she is just like me and hates the feel of them! But she still loved this craft)
  4. Once all cotton balls are attached, carefully cut out the feet & hand prints.
  5. Attach them as shown in the picture. Hands for ears & feet for the bunnies feet.
  6. Add extra embellishments. Pipe cleaners for whiskers, draw on some eyes or add googley eyes, draw on a mouth and attach a bow.
  7. Admire your very cute & festive creation. This bunny would be lovely attached with a magnet on the back for Grandparents.

Painted eggs.
Now this craft is the most simple out of all of them. You don’t need to make anything & it is easy! I decided this year to use styrofoam eggs instead of blowing eggs to dye. Using real eggs would be a bit tricky with a toddler. These eggs aren’t delicate so they can’t be broken & paint is a bit easier for a toddler to work with instead of food dye. Also, I can never find white eggs in Australia!
You will need;
  • Styrofoam eggs. I got mine from a cheap shop a few years ago.
  • Paint.
  • Paint brushes.
How to;
  1. Paint the eggs. LuLu had a lot of fun experimenting with how to paint the eggs.
  2. Let dry, they dry fairly quickly.
  3. Display & admire!

Toilet roll bunnies.
These bunnies turned out very sweet & they make me smile. They were simple to make & LuLu thought the bunnies were so great. Once again these guys needed googley eyes but drawing them on would work fine.
You will need;
  • Paper towel or toilet rolls – cardboard tubes.
  • Scissors.
  • Stapler & sticky tape.
  • Paint.
  • A marker.
  • A cotton wool ball.
  • Any embellishments you wish to use. (Glitter & googley eyes are not needed, but in LuLu’s opinion are a must have in any craft project!)
How to;
  1. Cut 2 small sections from the cardboard tube – these will be “the ears”
  2. Pinch the circles to make ovals.
  3. Attach the ears to a longer bit of the cardboard tube “the body”.
  4. Paint & decorate how you wish.
  5. If you wish to add glitter, do so while the paint is wet. The easiest way I found for us to do this was to hold the tube with my fingers inside & just roll it as LuLu sprinkled the glitter on.
  6. Add features such as eyes, whiskers, nose & mouth.
  7. Attach cotton wool ball tail on.
  8. You now have one very sweet bunny made from something that was probably going to the recycling bin!

    BEF1532D-0BFE-48C0-9194-9940464A503D_zpses1skzxt (1)C28C399F-64D5-443F-B397-CE4C76D76CA0_zpsmbqrylyy (1)8A25AF18-D67E-4399-A53D-B45D655AE3F0_zpst90tqju3
I hope you found these little craft projects inspiring & that you do one or all of them with your little bunnies!

These crafts just weren’t fun & wasting time, as we craft I try to encourage LuLu to learn new things. Colours, shapes, how things work, about bunny rabbits etc.
Everything is a learning experience for kids. Craft time is can be extremely beneficial to your child’s brain development.
Some of the benefits of doing crafts include, but aren’t limited to…

  • Bilateral Co-ordination; Can be strengthened with crafts.
  • Creative skills; Feeling different textures, improving her painting skills & expressing herself with what she likes.
  • Cognitive thinking; Understanding cause & effect (mixing colours,) & visual processing.
  • Motor skills; painting, sprinkling glitter, controlling tricky objects to paint (cardboard tubes & eggs roll around unlike a flat piece of paper) & helping attach small embellishments.
  • Thinking skills; Considering options & making decisions.
  • Problem Solving; Working out ways to stop the egg from rolling & how to paint a round object.
  • Listening skills; Following instructions.
  • Science; That glue is sticky when wet but isn’t when it is dry, round things roll & paint is wet but when we wait & have patience it will dry.
Doing craft is so much more than just passing the time and making things that look cute. It is amazing the things young children pick up & learn!
It is also a great time to spend with our children, bonding, talking, working out what colours they like and teaching them things.
I encourage you to take a day, an afternoon or just a few hours before Easter or over the Easter long weekend and make some crafts with your child. They don’t have to look perfect, your child will not care – the crafts above aren’t perfect, but we are proud of them & think they look wonderful. We had so much fun making them and LuLu just loves craft time and I can bet your child will love making them too with you.
I look forward to seeing your creations on social media!
